Not quite scavenging, but close

So do you like discounts?
Do you use coupons?
Do you use store discount cards?

Me too!!!

Since I  reached the "cough, cough" retirement age I have noticed that there are lots of small perks to being an old fuddy-duddy. You can get free drinks, free food, discounts on food, discounted services and lots of other things. Gas stations offer loyalty cards for pennies off a gallon of gas. Grocery stores offer discounts on gas at certain stores if you shop their store. It may seem like small change, but it adds up. I keep telling SweetiePie that I should keep track of the discounts that we get. And since I am writing this on February 1st and this is the shortest month of the year, it seemed like an ideal time to keep track of my discounts for a month.

We have key tags for Wendy's, all the drug stores, Sheetz gas card and some more I can't remember at the moment. I decided to keep track of all of our discounts, freebies and the like, for the month of February. Just to see how much we save every time we say "Senior Discount Please". I hope I'm surprised by the total.

I have been tracking our bag sale items also. The stores that have bag sales leave their original sales tags on and just mark the tags. That is a simple way to see how much we paid for an item versus what the store was asking for it originally. It is a big discount to get a pair of jeans for 15c rather than pay $4.99 for them inside the store. 20c for a vintage wool coat that was marked $24.99. My kind of bargain.

So after one day, here is my savings
Gas        $0.46
Wendy's $3.57

I'll try to post weekly to keep the progress updated.

Let me know if you want to participate and what your savings are. You don't have to be a senior to get discounts. Coupons, buy one get one free, sale items, whatever you get at a discount. Bonus points if you find money in the pockets of things you buy.

Now get out there and save, save, save.

  1. I had a text offer for a 6" sandwich at Subway for the price of a fountain drink. Since I was there, I discovered all of their footlong subs are temporarily on sale for $6 as long as you don't upsize the meat. Hubby's favorite sandwich is $8+ on their regular price menu so I got myself the 6" and split hubby's into two for two lunches. Instead of buying the tiny prepackaged chips, Doritos were on sale for $2 a bag because of the Superbowl ad. We pretty much never have these so not only is it frugal to fill a sandwich bag from the big bag, it's also a big treat and makes for a complete lunch. Since our local grocery store had Progresso coupon on as their loss leader for $1/can last week (haha, jokes on them, I bought 25 cans of soup and that's it!) I also sent a can in his lunch in case the 6" sandwich wasn't enough food for him.

We don't qualify for age discounts at this time so these are either sales or loyalty member program perks.

    1. Everyone is always eligible for discounts no matter the age. I personally don't us coupons for name brand stuff because I use store brands but I would have totally grabbed all the progresso. And we always use any coupon or store special just because we are super cheap. Good job on the soup and subs

  2. Fun post! I am always looking for a bargain. I almost always have a coupon for everything I buy. My family likes to make jokes. It probably is a bit humorous (and embarrassing) when coupons are bursting out of my purse!! I just really hate paying retail/full price for anything =) I hope you are doing well and are getting some sleep =)

    1. When I was little my dad would pick up anything off the street that he thought he could use. Pencils, screws, nuts, bolts basically anything he saw. I was spool embarrassed, then. I guess now looking back that's what you do when your dad dies when you are nine and then you live thru the depression. I guess I come by being cheap, frugal, or pinny pinching honestly. It must be in my genes. I can never pass up a bargain.

    1. I got my tags at the drive thru and they forgot to put them in the bag and I had to go in to get them in my at home flannel pants...embarrassing. But SweetiePie loves his frosty.

  4. My husband picked up a commercial food warmer (with glass doors in front and back) that someone was throwing out, cleaning out an estate. He tested it and it works fine. They sell new for $800. He said to list on Craigslist for $50. I listed it for $125 and the guy who picked it up was so happy to have it for his Man Cave. They will use it to keep their sandwiches warm at their Superbowl party! We are also avid couponers, although we don't eat out much.

    1. Nice flip. Great profit margin!! I see shoppers at thrift stores pass up items that need a little soap, water and elbow grease. Some people think all of the stuff you see shopping is clean and perfect.
