I live in the South..y'all..and we don't do snow and ice very well. In fact, we don't get enough to have any practice to get ready for the serious slick stuff. When the weather guys start forecasting snow or ice everyone rushes to the grocery store for bread, milk and the necessities. Most of the time if you check the carts of your fellow shoppers you will see bread, milk, beer and chips. Pretty much everything a Southerner needs to get through a few days of forced confinement.
Now all that is left to do is hunker down and wait.
Oh and get the car to the end of the driveway, unless you like to shovel a path after all the ice and snow hits the ground.
Oh and get the sled from the basement. If you don't have a sled just grab the nearest large cardboard box, stomp it flat, or garbage can lid or just use your imagination for what will fly down the hill.
Oh and get a large mixing bowl, a big spoon, sugar and milk ready to make snow cream. Never heard of snow cream? It's the Southern equivalent of ice cream only made with fresh snow. Technically you aren't suppose to use the first snowfall for snow cream but who can resist. The old wives tales is that the first snow is "dirty" and it cleans the air out and the second snow is "safe" to eat. Pooh...I ain't afraid of a little dirt.
Now sit back, put on a pot of soup or chili and put your feet up, have a little snow cream for dessert and relax...until you have to dig the car out to get to work.
WAIT...I don't have to go to work. I am an ebay seller!! It could snow for a week and I would have enough to list for two
Happy Weather!!
Yes to all of the above, except for the snow cream. Sadly, it's not just dirt that is i that precipitation. Dirt, yes, but pollution is the real word for it, and in addition to dust and dirt brought in from afar - other continents even, that includes heavy metals and radioactive particles. Tempting, but better to just say no.
ReplyDeleteI haven't made snow cream in years. Just hand over a Klondike bar and everything will be fine or Edy's Mint Chocolate Chip or...oh it doesn't matter as long as it's ice cream.
DeleteWe're in SC and not expected to get anything but a couple of chilly days, yet the weatherman whispered the "S" word. Yesterday I went grocery shopping and got the last gallon of milk. I didn't buy it because of the impending weather but because we were nearly out of milk...But I had to keep an eye on my cart since two other shoppers tried to take it.
ReplyDeleteLooks like SC just got rain. Our weather guys were saying 2-4"snow, then it went to 4-6" and when I went to bed last night it was 4-8". Last night we got maybe 1/4" with more sleet than anything else. Not anywhere near 4" but it has snowed all morning so we may get up to the 1" mark soon. I'll take the snow anytime but the ice is what I have problems with. And we don't have a 4 wheel drive, nor do we really need one most of the year. SweetiePie wants a 4 wheel drive so we can get out. And go where? I'll stay inside thank you very much.
DeleteWe got a few flakes that you could only see in the air but it did get colder than they suggested. I'm a plumber's daughter so we took pipe precautions but few others in our neighborhood didn't and I filled up several gallons of water for those who woke up to non existent pipes. I have a 4WD but if there's any weather whatsoever, I still try to not go anywhere just because I don't have enough experience of what to react to - I would hate to be the cause of anything. A couple of years ago, we had an ice storm. Since we don't normally get much winter the counties don't own proper equipment to address it so for two weeks, they shut down bridges, schools and begged people to only go out in the middle of the day (warmest) of they had to. Oh, the uproar from locals! I pitied all of the officials because they were really just trying to keep people safe. We didn't have mail pick up or delivery in that time so I just contacted people and all but one said they totally understood and to just get it in when possible. That one? Cussed me up and down, said that I shouldn't be selling online if I wasn't prepared to follow through, etc. There's always one... 😁
DeleteWe got about 4" but got an inch of sleet first so that will make everything harder to thaw. Our road is very shady and they never clean it off. Very frustrating but our county is very rural (can you say redneck central?) and it would be impossible to get everything cleared in a day or two. The weather guys are calling for 70 on Friday. What??
DeleteA couple of years ago my daughter had frozen pipes and her ceiling fell in and damaged her bedroom totally. She was ready this time and came through without a bust anywhere. Glad you only had cold and no snow.
I live in Wisconsin I would never ever eat the snow... just saying
